Wind and Solar Works for Off-The-Grid Farming

We have asmall wind generator and its been running for about 10 years with little problem. Last summer we put a set of solar panels on our Elec-Trac (electric yard/garden tractor)

We like both systems but found that having power when you want it can be a problem - particularly winters.

We do use quite a bit of solar heat gain for our buildings and I can't say enough good things about being up north in the winter and the sun comes out. Sitting in a sunny patio door or by a window lifts the spirit and gives a much needed boost of vitamin D in its sunshine. . . not to mention a winter tan.

Using solar this far up north may sound idiotic to many people but few realize that once snow hits the ground - the intense reflection of sunlight can heat up areas like parabolic lenses focuses light. Snow blindness can occur if you improperly direct solar light. Used properly, solar can lift the spirit by adding free warmth and energy (and vitamin D) to your life. Solar can be used to sterilize and heal the soil, water and other life essentials. Take advantage of it and live better - naturally.

The first way to access solar in any building is to look for solar then where solar bounce can come from. It can come from the ground or even walls on nearby buildings if the reflect light (rather than absorb it).

Adding south facing windows is the first and most obvious choice. Finding enough space for bounce light is second. Bounce light can come from any surface. In the winter snow or ice can provide heat but other options can also be used where snow doesn't fall. Tarps also come with reflective sides - but be sure to secure them!

Clear plastic films are applied to windows by spraying the window with rubbing alcohol (because it doesn't freeze as easily as water), then spread the clear plastic over the window and squeegee out the air bubbles. Finally, trim the plastic to the window edges. Summer window shades are the other part of the equation. They are decorative bronze but silver is also available. We found our reflective window film on eBay and used old pull-down shades to make new shades. They reflect (up to) 80% of the summer heat. Solar Shutters collect heat during the day and get closed off at night. Pretty simple. Several designs are out there and there are only a few things to consider - Make sure they are going up in a good location. If you make them yourself- use a dark interior to collect as much heat as possible. Make sure they are well sealed.
