Mushroom Raising -
I found a lot of youtube videos on how to raise mushrooms so I won't repeat that info here.
What I will tell you is the difference between bags of growing mushrooms and logs is in time-sometimes months even years.
Bags of innoculated hay will start to produce mushrooms in about 8 weeks. Once started, they will produce for months. Logs will take years to produce their first mushrooms and once they do, you may have mushrooms for the rest of your life. Certain species of mushrooms prefer the logs, but most will grow in either medium. The difference is little in the taste and texture.
If you are going to raise mushrooms - get some good books since there are so many kinds of mushrooms and they have so many uses.
Some species of mushrooms can be used to clean up toxic soil and others will remove parasites from pastures. Knowing which mushrooms do what is a scince in its infancy but eating them has always been a healthy choice. For instance, Shitaki mushrooms are the only known source of vitamin D besides sun-light.
Mushrooms growing can be an investment but is well worth any farmer's time since they offer diversity, health for the land, soil and the people who live there as well as a way to produce a variety of goods.
